…and I guess as an addendum to that (feeling chatty today) it’s kind of sad that publishers are not more receptive to these kinds of strategies. With the amazing press coverage and word of mouth System Shock 2 received, it could have easily been one of those games but it feels like EA just gave up on it straight away.
I agree with this, it’s unfortunate there doesn’t seem to be a lot of appreciation for a “long tail” when it comes to this kind of stuff. The Witcher is a great example because that game actually sold a ton of copies, and it even did so over a long period of time by using consumer friendly strategies like free updates and the enhanced edition. But I get the impression that average folks don’t consider it as big of a hit as it actually is…if that makes any sense!
Absolutely. We don’t really get numbers full stop. We never have. A company will proudly tell you “5 million sold in first week!”, but that’s it. Equally a smaller publisher could sell a million copies a week for the firs 6 weeks. But which one will be seen as the big hit?
The Witcher on PC sold over one million copies in it’s SECOND YEAR of being on sale. Your Bioshock’s are flash in the pans in comparison! :).
Youtube is suck a fickle beast. I think a little cross promotion/colab project will do you guys well ( I came upon this great channel when you did a cast with TB.) Best of luck on getting more views/subscribers, but at least know that the few who watch really do appreciate and enjoy the channel.
The System Shock series is still one of my all-time favorites. I just recently replayed BOTH about a month ago.
