You absolutely need the original game, Cities and Knights is unplayable without it.

Can you play this expansion pack without having the original Catan ? I want to buy only the expansion, but I want to know is it a standalone game or do I need some pieces from the original ? Thank You

yes the learning curve for cities and knights is higher than the original, but so what what: the original is as easy as candyland. once you get the hang of cities and knights theres no going back.
consider them two different games, appealing to two different types of players. maybe that will help.
cities and knights is *awesome*.
