Anyone can create a video game of his/her own. This is proven by Dylan Viale, the 10-year-old fifth grader from the Martinez, California-based Hidden Valley Elementary school who created theQuacky’s Quest video game for his blind grandmother Sherry. The protagonist in the video game is an odd looking duck which you have to navigate in a maze collecting diamonds as you look for the primitive McGuffin or the Golden Egg. This fruit of love and hard labor has won first place in the science fair conducted at Dylan’s school.
Dylan has created the Quacky’s Quest using the GameMaker application which is utilized in video game design. This starter version has greatly helped him in developing the video game through learning how to make rudimentary prototypes, designing and programing. Through the video game design application, Dylan learned about sprits, objects and the basic concepts in designing a game.
Quacky’s Quest is a video game where blind people will have to navigate mazes in order to find the Golden Egg. This game was not finished smoothly as it has its main flaw during the testing period. The main problem is that her grandmother had no idea that she is backtracking accidentally and not progressing in the game. Dylan was not frustrated by this problem, instead he browsed through the Internet reading blogs and frequently asked questions in order to find a solution. And the solution is that he created a negative sound once the player backtracked accidentally through the sound of hitting a wall or a boulder.
Quacky’s Quest is the fruit of love of a fifth grader for his blind grandmother. This video game is also a brilliant example that anyone can create a video game of their own. You just need to have the inspiration and the determination of completing the goal.
