Absolutely, what I ask my players is no more than this: show up, try, succeed. I think the idea of giving everyone the same XP is without merit. If one person is playing at a 9, one at an 8, one at a 6 1/2 & one at a 5. That’s the XP they deserve & that’s how I’ve done it pretty much since I started DMing & it has always produced the better game.

Totally agree with you man reward the people who are RP ing and contributing to the story. Why would a GM want someone who is not doing this. If you reward mediocre play that is what is encouraged that is what you get. There’s nothing about ego here.

that’s not what I was talking about at all. It’s about pushing each other to play better, so that the game gets to the highest level possible & everyone can get themselves as deeply into character as they can & make the most contributions they can to the game. The players get votes to allow them to decide who’s done the best job. Petty fights are for high schoolers, that’s not our style at all.

Yes, but you also mention the need for competition amongst the players, the be on top of the race etc. I find this counterproductive. In most adventures characters are meant to work together to achieve a common goal, not see whose one is ‘biggest’ so to speak. If you bring too much ego into a game, you can easily end up stuck with petty fights among players over stupid things. That’s not fun for anyone. That being said, there is nothing wrong with extra rewards for good role playing.
